Acupuncture in Spain

The Congress adopted 29 September 2009 a proposal forwarded by the Committee on Health and Consumer Affairs of the Spanish Parliament on a new act recognizing acupuncture as a medical act (28, 263). The law is planned to come into force in 2011 (263).

Acupuncture treatment as a medical act can only be legally practised by medical doctors (263). Acupuncture is regulated by the government to be provided only by medical doctors (MDs) (106).

Acupuncture treatment may be provided at health centers (public or private) if the person performing the acupuncture is a MD and the center is approved by the regional regulations as appropriate (263). Statutory regulation and issuing of diplomas of medical acupuncturists is approved by the Medical Association Council (106). Undergraduate and postgraduate acupuncture training is offered at universities (106).
