The use of natural remedies and herbal medicine by demented persons: The role of different health care personnel

The project is a collaborative project between Hilde Risvoll senior consultant and specialist in neurology at Valnesfjord Health Center, Valnesfjord, Norway, Trude Giverhaug, PhD, The Regional Drug Information Center (RELIS) at the University Hospital of North Norway, and the first menus Kjell Halvorsen and Marit Waaseth, Department of Pharmacy, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø, Norway


The aim of the project is to map patient safety in relation to the use of natural remedies and herbal medicine by persons with dementia, and to describe the role of various health actors. The project was planned in the form of 4 different surveys to the following actors: employees in pharmacies in a selected number of municipalities in Nordland, employees in the home services of a selected number of municipalities in northern Norway, all members of Nordland Dementia Association and all permanent residents in Nordland. This project evaluates the safety of persons with dementia who uses herbal medicine and herbal remedies. The long term goal is to develop routines to increase the safety of this target group.
